Accessibility

The Accessibility Cluster (KBC) is led by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) and coordinated by the National Subsistence Action Council (NACCOL). The KBC cluster is comprised of government ministries/ agencies, academics and non -governmental organizations. This cluster focuses on the dimension of accessibility to food which is the ability of the population to obtain healthy, safe food and meet the needs of lifestyle either through purchasing or subsistence economy.

  • Food Assistance Program
  There is various food program from government bodies to address food issues whether in terms of supplementing lack of nutrients to assisting the needy in time of needs. National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) plays an important role during disasters to help victims by giving temporary shelter, food and other assistance. While as Department of Social Welfare Malaysia (JKM) focus more on giving consistence aid to targeted group such as those below Poverty Line Income (PGK), Person with Disabilities (OKU), senior citizen and so on. In additions, supports from private bodies and NGOs that continue to raise public awareness and spread their wings to those unfortunate people especially by providing free meals.
     
 
  • The Food Bank Malaysia (PFBM)
   

PFBM has been introduced as one of the ‘Inisiatif Peduli Rakyat’ program by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) to help the less fortunate to get food which can indirectly reduce the cost of living. The program is also in line with the goal of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 12.3, which is to achieve a reduction of half of the total food waste released by the retail and consumer industry by 2030.

The concept of this programme is to save the surplus food that are still edible through the collection of contributors such as supermarkets, manufacturers, food entrepreneurs, hotels and corporate companies. The food collected will then be distributed to identified target groups from poor and disabled families, welfare homes, food aid centers, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) as well as underprivileged University students.

  • The School Milk Program (PSS)
   

PSS is a program implemented by the Ministry of Education Malaysia (MOE) together with dairy companies in line with the concept of Malaysian Incorporation. It is implemented concurrently with the Supplementary Meal Plan (RMT) for students from poor families with low socio -economic status to get a balanced diet while in school.

The program also aims to improve the health and nutrition of primary school students to ensure the physical growth, mental health and general health of school children are improved. PSS also aims to encourage students to drink milk at an early stage. The selection criteria for students consists of primary school students, especially from rural areas and families with a monthly income of RM 400 and less, which is RM 800 per capita.

farmer-to-consumer concept of locally farmed fresh produce; poultry, fish, vegetables and fruits sold at affordable prices

By collaborating with Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (MDTCA) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industries (MAFI), PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad (PDB) aims to assist local farmers’ livelihoods by connecting them directly to consumers, whilst ensuring consumers have easy access to affordable fresh produce that are capped at RM10 price point currently.
