Introduction

The Global Food Security Index (GFSI) was developed by The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) based in London, United Kingdom. The EIU exercises full editorial control over all content, including data collection, analysis and forecasting for this report. The EIU receives financial support from Corteva Agriscience, a global agricultural company that conducts open trade activities to assist farmers around the world in maximizing productivity to increase yields and profits.

This GFSI report is issued with the involvement of a panel of experts in various fields since it was first introduced in 2012. This report aims to assess the level of vulnerability of countries to food security with the involvement of 113 countries divided into six (6) regions namely Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America , Middle East and North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, and North America.

There are 58 indicators with qualitative and quantitative measures which are divided into four (4) categories:-

  1. Affordability;
  2. Availability;
  3. Quality & Safety; dan
  4. Natural Resources & Resilience.

For each report issued annually, the EIU will outline the factors that need to be considered and influence the current scenario in driving food security. Thus, the index in the current report cannot be directly compared with the index released in the previous report. However, for comparative purposes, the EIU has readjusted the previous time series to the latest and reported in the current report.
